216 Hillsdale

Built 1893 by Francis Mowry (who also built 220 Hillsdale), and believed to be designed by Newsom brothers, who also designed the Carson Mansion among other notable buildings. This two-story Queen Anne/Eastlake style house boasts marvelously intricate spindlework, a large curved porch, multi-paned windows, and of course, lots of color. Typically dominated by a pedimented, wide slanted bay, this design has unusual decorative elements. Balconntees created on the upper level by the extension of turned posts from the cornice are delicately ornamented by miniature horseshoe arches as well as a spindle frieze and balustrade. The horseshoe arch is enlarged on the porch and is highlighted by radiating spindlework.
