517 Fifth Street

Designed by San Francisco architect William Curlett and erected under the supervision of local architect Knowles Evans in 1902, the Gross Building occupies a quarter-block. Despite a history of alterations and a major fire in 1923, the building retains many of its twentieth century Classical Revival details. On the upper level, note the rusticated brick piers capped by Ionic double-hung sash windows in molded brick frames with keystone ornament. A terra-cotta cornice is found on both stories. The altered lower floor has recently been renovated. (Green Book)
